Fire suppression system work to periodically close cafes

Over the next several months, Storz Pavilion, Clarkson Cafe and Nebraska Cafe will undergo renovations to the fire suppression systems in the food preparation areas.

Construction schedule

  • May 1-10 — Storz Deli closed for construction. Coffee cart and dining room will remain open. Pizza station in Nebraska Cafe will be closed.
  • May 11-20 — Clarkson Cafe Selona Grill and Nebraska Cafe bakery under renovation.
  • May 21-30 — Nebraska Cafe will have limited service.
  • June 1-20 — University Tower kitchen renovation.
  • June 21 to Aug. 10 — Clarkson Tower kitchen renovation.

This will mean each of the three facilities will be closed partially or entirely for abbreviated periods of time throughout the spring and summer.

Following a recommendation from the State Fire Marshal during last year’s CMS visit, it was determined that the current fire suppression system is out-of-date and needs to be replaced.

The current system in several cases is more than 40 years old.

Construction will take place seven days a week throughout the project.

The upgrade will be completed in phases from May through August. The new system will have a manual pull system in case of fire and will be better lit than it is currently.

Food and Nutrition Services projects no interruptions in providing food to patients in a timely manner and will work to minimize delays.
