“I was teaching some doctoral students a course and was nervous about how it would be received. It was very introspective, a lot of stuff about checking one’s motives and leaving egos at the door. I mean, you can’t really care for patients if you’re only worried about yourself.

“One student was a bright, cheerful young lady who I didn’t realize was struggling with her career choice. When the course finished, she came to me and said, ‘All semester I’ve wondered what exactly it is I am doing here, and now, after this class, I know.'”
