Dr. Are to discuss Bollywood today at noon

By some estimates, it is older than Hollywood. Indian cinema (also known as Bollywood), is an integral part of life in India with more than 1,100 movies produced each year.

Elements of Bollywood were seen in the Oscar winning 2008 film, Slumdog Millionaire.

Chandra Are, M.D., assistant professor of surgical oncology, will lead a campus event today at noon in the Durham Research Center Auditorium about this special style of film.

“Although a form of entertainment, films in India go far beyond just entertainment in terms of their influence,” Dr. Are said. “These movies helped India gain independence and are one of the major drivers of economy not only in India but in many parts of the world.”

The first 50 participants will receive free lunch.
