Lookin’ at U – John Barrier

picture disc.Quick, think of five things others should know about you.

That’s the theme behind a series in UNMC Today called “Lookin’ at U.”

Each Thursday, we randomly select a medical center employee to feature.

This week, we feature John Barrier, webmaster in the College of Nursing.

John Barrier, right, and his brother, Joe Barrier, stand behind the restored chassis of a 1963 Studebaker R2 Super Lark.

Here, in his own words, are five fun facts about John:

  • My most prized possession is my 1963 Studebaker R2 Super Lark. Built with a factory Paxton supercharged V8 Avanti drivetrain, this barn find is undergoing a complete ground up restoration.

  • During all but the winter months, I drive to New Prague, Minn., regularly to work on the car at my brother’s farm.

  • I lived and worked at King Khalid International airport in Riyahd, Saudi Arabia for two and a half years after the first Gulf War.

  • I’m a regular reader of science fiction and fantasy novels. My favorite authors are Isaac Asimov (Foundation series), Robert Silverberg (Majipoor series), Steven R. Donaldson (Thomas Covenant series), Robert Heinlein (everything), Frank Herbert (Dune series) and Tolkien (Lord of the Rings trilogy).

  • My son and I are both World of Warcraft fanatics. I have played the game since it was first released and have gotten together with my “guildies” to meet each other in real life. Despite knowing each other’s real names, we always refer to each other by the abbreviated form of our primary character name, which in my case is “Hep.”
