Lookin’ at U – Michelle Simon

picture disc.Quick, think of five things others should know about you.

That’s the theme behind a series in UNMC Today called “Lookin’ at U.”

Each Thursday, we randomly select a medical center employee to feature.

This week, we feature Michelle Simon, distance education associate in the School of Allied Health Professions.

Here, in her own words, are five fun facts about Michelle:

  • My husband and I built our house during our first year of marriage. The only three things that we hired out were digging out the foundation, insulating the exterior walls with spray foam and taping/mudding the drywall. With the help of our families, everything else was done by us.

  • I am the oldest of five children and have 38 first cousins — a typical Irish Catholic family.

  • When I was 10 years old we moved from 41st and Hamilton St. to a 250-acre farm northwest of Bennington. My mom and I said we would never move to the country so we were going to pitch a tent in our urban yard. It’s 23 years later and you can’t get me back to the city.

  • Within one year of living at the farm we had three horses, one cow, three pigs, three rabbits, five dogs, 80 chickens and three turkeys. For some reason my dad thought if we lived on farm then we knew how to farm. It was definitely the greatest experience of my childhood, but more work then we could handle. As a result, a few years later we only had dogs.

  • When I was 13 years old, I took my Dad’s truck out for a joy ride while he was away at work. I was driving on gravel and lost control and rolled it a few times. The truck landed on its top and was completely totaled and I walked away with minor scrapes and bruises. I have believed in guardian angels ever since.

Read UNMC Today next Thursday to see who is featured in the next Lookin’ at U article. Who knows — it could be U.
