Three Nebraska state senators were on campus Wednesday to try their hand using UNMC’s computer-assisted surgical equipment, reading X-rays and diagnosing conditions through problem-based learning.

The group included Sen. Lowen Kruse of Omaha District 13; Sen. Donald Pederson of North Platte District 42; and Sen. Elaine Stuhr of Bradshaw District 24, and her husband Boyd.

The senators spent five hours touring various areas of the medical center including The Lied Transplant Center, the Islet Processing Lab (located on the ninth floor of the Lied Transplant Center), radiology reading room, and UNMC Eppley Cancer Center.

They heard presentations on UNMC’s construction projects, its daVinci surgical system and bioterrorism preparedness efforts. They also learned more about problem-based learning, distance education and workforce shortages and development of alternative drug delivery systems.
