Below is a list of achievements, activities and happenings involving UNMC staff, faculty and students.

Mary McNamee, Ph.D., assistant vice chancellor for academic affairs, was one of four members of the Hope Medical Outreach Coalition honored for their service on the board of directors. Dr. McNamee served as one of the two community representatives on the board as secretary and president. Hope Medical Outreach Coalition helps provides specialty health referral services for the underserved and low income uninsured in the Omaha Metropolitan Area.

Joyce Black, Ph.D., associate professor in the UNMC College of Nursing, will be inducted as a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing in November in Washington. She is among the 116 new fellows who will be inducted. Selection criteria include evidence of significant contributions to nursing and health care.

Rahman Strum, a student in the UNMC master’s degree in public health program, was part of a group of University of Nebraska faculty and students who went to Madagascar to develop a clean water supply.

Dr. Masad Barhoum, director general of Western Galilee Hospital in Israel, recently visited UNMC and toured the Eppley Cancer Center. He also met with UNMC Chancellor Harold Maurer, M.D., cancer center director Ken Cowan, M.D., Ph.D., and other UNMC faculty. Dr. Barhoum later gave an evening presentation for the Omaha community at the Jewish Community Center.

Mary Pat Pelini — the wife of Nebraska Football Coach Bo Pelini — stopped by campus on Monday to present Dr. Cowan with a check for $25,000 for breast cancer research. The money was raised at Football 101 held in June.

Children’s Hospital & Medical Center — which has an affiliation with UNMC — unveiled its new Children’s Specialty Pediatric Center this week. A public open house at the center (84th and W. Dodge Road) will be held on Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m.

Twenty-one high school juniors and seniors recently spent four days at UNMC participating in the annual Summer Health Professions Workshop hosted by the UNMC Youth Learning Center. Student spent time spent in the lab and learned how to suture using bananas, about forensic medicine and the wide variety of health careers taught at UNMC.
