Lookin’ at U — Tom Gaffney

picture disc. Quick, think of five things others should know about you.
That’s the theme behind a series in UNMC Today called “Lookin’ at U.”

Each Thursday, we randomly select a medical center employee to feature.

This week, we feature Tom Gaffney, learning resource center coordinator at the College of Nursing Northern Division in Norfolk.

Here, in his own words, are five fun facts about Tom:
  • I was born in California and spent much of my adult life in San Diego, were I met my Nebraska-born wife Patty and raised our three children.

  • Prior to coming to the UNMC College of Nursing Northern Division, I passed through a number of careers including building underwater communications equipment for deep sea divers and designing submarine acoustic tracking systems.

  • Not too long ago, Patty came back to Nebraska to teach high school science and we bought a big old house (by urban standards) in the small community of Wisner. For me, it has been a great community and another introduction to the unique aspects of small town life. For example, I wonder how long it will take for my neighbors to refer to my house by a name other than “Cop Bob’s house?”

  • Contrary to regional traditions, I am not much of a sports fan, but do like to jog to relax. On the other hand, having grown up helping my dad work on everything mechanical and electrical, the technology traditions of the medical and agricultural fields are fascinating.

  • Over the years it has become a habit with me to regularly smile and greet coworkers, students and strangers whenever we pass. So the next unsolicited smile and greeting you encounter may not be a cell phone salesperson, but just me saying hello!
