UNMC, The Nebraska Medical Center and UNMC Physicians recently were honored at Holland Center for the Performing Arts for their collective support of Omaha Performing Arts.

Bruce Buehler, M.D., recently received the “Help is Hope” award from the Autism Action Partnership. The award honors an individual whose unselfish commitment to the cause of autism advances programs and much-needed resources for families and individuals.

Paul Dobesh, Pharm.D., associate professor of pharmacy practice, has received the 2010 College of Pharmacy 2010 Distinguished Teacher Award. The awardee is selected annually by pharmacy students. Dr. Dobesh also won the award in 2007.

Keith Swarts and Jayme Nekuda, Ph.D., at the Athens Marathon.
Patricia Hoffman, video services facilitator for UNMC, received the Wayne Fischer Memorial Award at the 2010 Nebraska Distance Learning Association (NDLA) Conference last week for her outstanding contributions to distance learning. Hoffman has been coordinated videoconference distance learning efforts at UNMC since 2006, and prior to that was distance learning coordinator at Chadron State College for 13 years.

Several College of Nursing faculty members and students were honored during the March of Dimes annual celebration of the best nurses in Nebraska. The awardees are listed below.

Distinguished Nurse Award Winner (Top Award)

  • Teresa Barry, Ph.D., assistant professor of families and health systems

Excellence in Nursing Award Winners (Top 25)

  • Shirley Wiggins, Ph.D., assistant professor in the College of Nursing-Lincoln Division
  • Karen McGivney-Liechti, instructor in the College of Nursing-Lincoln Division
  • Margaret Kaiser, Ph.D., assistant professor of community-based health

Student Nurse Excellence Award Winners

  • Crystal Modde, Omaha
  • Elizabeth Walton, Scottsbluff
  • Nichole Wiener, Lincoln

Keith Swarts, director of business services, and his wife, Jayme Nekuda, Ph.D., division director of worklife benefits, recently completed both the Amsterdam Marathon and the Athens Marathon. This year marked the 2,500th anniversary of fabled run by Greek messenger from Marathon to Athens to bring news of a Grecian military victory that historians say preserved the modern concept of democracy.
