Spirit Week 2010 – Students to face-off in broomball tournament

Twelve teams of students will play in a two-day broomball tournament today and Friday starting at 3 p.m.

Tournament rules

  • Teams can have up to four players on the ice a time, this includes goalies;
  • Games last 20 minutes;
  • No hitting, checking, tripping, fighting or swatting with sticks is allowed;
  • All penalties result in penalty shots; and
  • Teams will alternate mid-ice shots at empty goals to settle tie games.

For those unfamiliar with broomball, it is to hockey what wiffle ball is to baseball.

Players forgo skates for shoes, hockey sticks for doctored brooms and pucks for a rubber ball about the size of a volleyball.

Each team registered for $25 and proceeds will benefit the Student Outreach Fund.

Today, eight games will be played between 3 and 6:15 p.m.

Three games will be played on Friday, including the tournament championship game, which starts at 3:50 p.m.

Come out and support your favorite team!
