picture disc.Organizations and individuals are being asked to consider nominating Omaha area women of color for awards that will recognize outstanding contributions in four categories: business/entrepreneur, education, professional volunteer, and youth. Nomination forms are due by Feb. 15.

Award recipients will be honored at the first University of Nebraska at Omaha Women of Color Awards Luncheon 2003, which will be in March. The event is sponsored by the University of Nebraska at Omaha, ConAgra Foods, Inc., and State Farm Insurance.

Recognizing leaders

Guest speaker will be Joyce Roché, president and chief executive officer of Girls Incorporated in New York. Girls Incorporated is a national research, education, and direct advocacy organization that encourages girls ages six to 18 to take risks and master physical, intellectual, and emotional challenges.

“We are proud to provide an opportunity to recognize achievements of women of color for the selfless contributions they make as leaders, role models, mentors and engaged leaders in the community,” said Mary Mudd, Ed.D., vice-chancellor of student affairs at UNO. “It is important that the diverse perspectives, insights and solutions of these outstanding women be highlighted and celebrated in an effort to encourage continued and future involvement of women of color.”

Award recipients will be invited to participate in community speaking events, and to serve as role models and mentors for various university-related programs and activities.
