Poison center tips about insect repellent

With flooding in region, there will be an increased use of insect repellents.

Mosquito-borne diseases such as West Nile Virus are of concern and using insect repellents that contain DEET is proven to be effective protection.

The Nebraska Regional Poison Center offers the following tips regarding insect repellents:

  • Always read and follow all directions and precautions on the product label.
  • Repellents should be sparingly applied only to clothing and exposed skin. Parents should apply repellent on their hands and then apply to a child’s skin to avoid over-application.
  • Never use repellents on wounds or abraded or irritated skin.
  • Wash repellent-treated skin with soap and water prior to bedtime or once indoors.
