UNMC’s hospital partner, The Nebraska Medical Center, has been ranked in nine specialties, more than any other hospital in the area, in U.S. News Media & World Report’s 2011-12 Best Hospitals rankings.
The specialties that qualify as “high performing” according to the publication include:
- Cancer;
- Ear, nose and throat;
- Gastroenterology;
- Geriatrics;
- Nephrology;
- Neurology and neurosurgery;
- Orthopaedics;
- Pulmonology; and
- Urology.
Nebraska Orthopaedic Hospital (NOH), a sister institution of The Nebraska Medical Center, also had a very strong showing in the report, ranking as the 38th best hospital in the country for orthopaedics. It’s the second-straight year that NOH has been nationally ranked.
The rankings cover 16 medical specialties and all 94 metro areas that have at least 500,000 residents and at least one hospital that performed well enough to be ranked.
