Longtime purchasing employee Robert D. Hansen dies

Robert D. Hansen, a longtime employee in the UNMC purchasing department, died Sunday (Feb. 23). He was 75.

Hansen, who retired from UNMC in 1990, was employed at UNMC approximately 41 years beginning his career at age 17 as a supply clerk in what was then known as the Bookstore. He delivered linens, exams and supplies to all areas of University Hospital.

Hansen left UNMC to serve in the Korean War, then returned for a period of time. After moving to California he returned again in 1954 to begin his career as a buyer in the purchasing department.

“Bob was an authority on the growth and history of UNMC and valued the friendship of his UNMC colleagues,” said one colleague, Susan Blum. “Bob’s friendly manner throughout his career was a benefit to the purchasing department and campus.”

Hansen retired March 31, 1990, and volunteered his time to UNMC public affairs leading tours on campus. He was a graduate of the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s Business College.

In retirement Hansen and his wife Ruth traveled and enjoyed spending time with family.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth E. Hansen, Omaha; sister, Helen M. Kennedy, Phoenix, Ariz.; daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Victor Montanye, Phoenix, Cheryl and Robert Hammond Sr., Bellevue, Neb.; son and daughter-in-law, Russell and Laura Hansen, Woodbine, Iowa; son, Robert ‘Skippy’ Hansen Jr., Terrell, Texas.; lifelong friends Lee and Mona Riviera, Omaha; 13 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. today (Feb. 25) with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Services will be Wednesday (Feb. 26) at 1 p.m. at West Center Chapel, 78th & West Center streets. Interment will be at Hillcrest with full military honors by the Millard American Legion Post 374 and VFW Post 8334.
