Nursing faculty members to lend knowledge, nursing education expertise

Two faculty from the UNMC College of Nursing will travel to Sorrento, Italy, March 13-15, for the Sigma Theta Tau International’s fifth think tank meeting. The meeting, titled, “Nurses and Health: A Global Future,” is part of the STTI’s Arista3 series.

The series, an initiative of STTI’s Honor Society of Nursing, was designed to tap the best thinking in confronting health issues of global significance, and provide a multinational, interdisciplinary platform from which to influence change in nursing practices.

Attending from UNMC will be Peggy Wilson, Ph.D., UNMC College of Nursing associate professor and associate dean for graduate programs, and Susan Susan Noble Walker, Ed.D., professor and chair of the department of gerontological, psychosocial and community health nursing. They will hear discussions of expert panelists and respond to the recommendations developed during the meetings. Their input will help shape an action plan.

Topics that will be discussed include:

  • How can nurses in southern Europe and the Mediterranean best contribute to the health of communities in the new millennium; and
  • What scholarly work and research are necessary to support the contributions to health care of nurses in southern Europe and the Mediterranean?

“They’re very intense meetings,” Dr. Wilson said. “It points out the problems in the world. We spend a lot of time talking about what can be done about the ‘brain drain’ of English-speaking nurses who leave their countries to work in North America and western Europe.”

Sigma Theta Tau International, Honor Society of Nursing provides leadership and scholarship in practice, education and research to enhance the health of all people.
