Dentistry to celebrate Professionals’ Day

The UNMC College of Dentistry in Lincoln will host its 17th Annual Professionals’ Day and 36th Annual Student Scientific Program Friday, March 21, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event provides students, faculty and the dental community an opportunity to share professional and academic activities.

The event will be in the Great Plains Room in the East Campus Union at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 37th & Fair streets. At the Annual Student Scientific Program — from 9 a.m. to noon — students will display dentistry projects. At 2:15 p.m., faculty and students will be honored with awards and recognition.picture disc.

Lawrence Tabak, D.D.S., Ph.D., director of the U.S. National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, National Institute of Health, in Bethesda, Md., will be the guest speaker. His 1:30 p.m. talk, titled “The Post-Genomic Era Enters the Mouth,” will address how discoveries being made about human genes mean new advances in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of oral health, as well as diseases and defects of the head and face.

Dr. Tabak heads a team of 450 scientists and staff with an annual budget of $350 million. The mission of the institute is to promote the general health of the American people by improving their oral, dental and head and face health.
