Employees urged to read insurance plan info

Employees enrolled in the Blue Cross Blue Shield medical and/or dental insurance plan recently received information regarding the impact of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) on the University of Nebraska’s Group Health and Prescription Drug Plans. This information included the university’s “Notice of Privacy Practices of Group Health Plans” which described the plans’ privacy practices, their legal duties and the employee’s rights concerning such information.

Since this new law will impact how and to whom your medical information relating to the health plan may be disclosed, employees are strongly urged to become familiar with these new provisions.

In addition to the copy received in the mail, employees may find this notice and a “Question and Answer” informational attachment on the University of Nebraska benefits Web page at www.nebraska.edu/hr/hr_benefits.shtml under the HIPAA Privacy Practices section.
