Below is a list of achievements, activities and happenings involving UNMC staff, faculty and students.

Jonathan Vennerstrom, Ph.D., professor of pharmaceutical sciences, was among 20 top malaria researchers and innovators from the U.S. who presented their work at an expo on Capitol Hill on April 25 — World Malaria Day. The presenters demonstrated how U.S. institutions make important contributions to the malaria fight.

Gang Pei, Ph.D., president of Tongji University in Shanghai, and several other key officials from the Chinese university are on campus this week. Dr. Pei will receive an honorary doctor of science degree at Saturday’s commencement for his efforts to build relationships with UNMC. Among those who are in Omaha with him are:

  • Dr. Chenghua Jiang, professor of surgery and the party chief of medical and life science division of Tongji University;
  • Dr. Guotong Xu, professor of ophthalmology and dean of Tongji University School of Medicine; and
  • Dr. Liming Cheng, professor of neurosurgery and the vice president of Tongji Hospita.

Aside from attending the commencement ceremony, the Tongji visitors also will:

  • Discuss collaborative translational research opportunities;
  • Discuss continued collaboration in medical education;
  • Work out an exchange program in physical therapy; and
  • Develop collaborations in nursing and public health.

Staff from UCLA charged with the implementation of an Epic electronic health record system similar to the One Chart system that went live at UNMC Physicians Clinics this week were on hand to observe the roll out of the new system. The team was in Omaha for two days to observe the command center and pair up with One Chart leadership to understand the dynamics of the project. UCLA will implement their Epic system, called CareConnect, in 2013.
