Employees urged to use desk side recycling containers

UNMC/NHS/UMA employees are urged to use their desk side recycling containers to ensure that materials are treated in a secure and confidential manner.

The mandatory recycling program will help UNMC/NHS/UMA meet the federal requirements for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). The recycling program provides a secured process by which UNMC/NHS/UMA can ensure that information is protected from the time it is created to the time it is destroyed by re-pulping and de-inking. Almost everything is recyclable except food, food wrappers and tissues.

In conjunction with making the program mandatory, campus recycling coordinator Rick Boldt said approximately 165 new, Army-green tubs – specifically designed for recycling materials — have been distributed across campus.

“Employees really only need to use their desk side containers,” Boldt said, adding that materials need not be shredded. “Environmental Service workers will use the secured, green tubs to transport materials to the recycling center.”

Departments are encouraged to contact Environmental Services at 559-4073 with concerns, or if they wish to request a tub, or have one removed. The tubs should be stored in a non-public area.
