Employee parking structure grand opening planned

One can almost hear the huge sighs of relief echoing from the UNMC parking office.

Parking and Cashiering Services Manager Tina Spencer and assistants Kelly Weyant and Lashon George have worked hard to move UNMC/NHS employees into all available parking stalls in UNMC’s new parking structure, officially named Lot 50.

Now, their smiles – and those of their parking customers — stretch nearly as far as the lines of cars in the new structure.

“Many parking customers are much happier because they park in Lot 50 or in other lots because of the openings as a result of the structure,” Spencer said. “Lot 50 is the best thing that’s happened for parking customers!”

On Thursday, May 22, UNMC will honor those who made the parking structure possible. Chuck Durham, John Wilson and Fred Petersen will be honored during a tailgate party for employees, students and volunteers.

Durham is the former chairman of HDR Inc., an architectural, engineering design and consulting firm. He now is chairman of Durham Resources.

Wilson is the president of Durham Resources. Peterson is the president and chief executive officer of OPPD.

“I’d like to thank Chuck Durham, Fred Peterson and John Wilson for this truly wonderful gift to UNMC,” UNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D., said. “This structure provides needed parking congestion relief for our employees, and it will allow us to strategically grow and beautify our campus in areas where ground-level parking lots now exist.”

The party and reception will take place on the structure’s top level, Level D. If it rains, the tailgate party and program will take place on the Emile Street level, Level B. Tailgating will begin at 1:30 p.m., and beverages, cookies and ice cream will be served. Door prizes will be awarded, and a deejay will enliven the celebration with music. The program to honor Durham, Peterson and Wilson will begin at 2 p.m.

The new structure has 1,364 employee parking spaces and 187 spaces for the Omaha Public Power District.
