Olympic bronze medallist Chris Klug will meet with fellow organ transplant recipients at the NHS/UNMC Transplant Reunion on July 12, 2003. Klug is the first American with an organ transplant to ever compete in the Olympic Games.

Honoring the donor’s decision

As it stands now in Nebraska, someone who wants to donate their organs and tissue must sign a donor card or drivers’ license and tell their family about their wishes. It is then up to the grieving family to decide whether to go ahead with the donation. A bill before the Nebraska Legislature would change that process by honoring the donor’s signature.

NHS among first to use ‘camera in a pill’

NHS is among the first in the region to use a new medical technology — capsule endoscope — that allows physicians to see what no one has been able to fully capture before — the entire length of the human small intestine. NHS began offering the diagnostic procedure in mid-November.

New NHS operating room benefits patients, physicians, students

A new operating room at NHS is the only one in the region giving surgery a new dimension. The Storz OR1 system gives surgeons infinite possibilities — from the ability to teleconference with other physicians to streaming live video of surgery to a colleague across the country or to a classroom across campus.

36 hours of surgery brings new hope to 10 NHS transplant patients

More than 30 hours of surgery resulted in 13 organ transplants for 10 patients at NHS. The transplant surgeries began around 1 p.m. on Tuesday, May 28 and continued until late Thursday afternoon, May 30.

When they were over, the surgical teams had transplanted six livers, one pancreas, one small bowel and four kidneys into nine adult and one pediatric patients. All 10 people are recovering at NHS.

Hollywood brings organ donation to the big screen

NHS wants to help movie fans separate fact from fiction in the Denzel Washington movie, “John Q.” The movie, which opens in theaters Feb. 15, tells the fictional story of a boy in need of a heart transplant.
