Study shows therapeutic promise for multiple sclerosis

It’s not a cure, but it is a step in the right direction. The results of a three-year study on the effects of autologous haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (AHSCT) in four patients with advanced multiple sclerosis were published recently in the journal Multiple Sclerosis.

College of Pharmacy graduate honored

When Samuel Augustine, Pharm.D, first began pharmacy school in the late 1960s, there were only about 1,800 drugs on the market. Now that number approaches 10,000. That is just one of the many changes that has taken place in the world of pharmacy, said Dr. Augustine, who has been named the UNMC College of Pharmacy Alumni Association’s Distinguished Alumnus.

New technology helps patients with inoperable tumors

The diagnosis of an inoperable brain tumor doesn’t have to mean certain death. A spinal tumor does not have to mean paralysis and a tumor that pushes on the auditory nerve doesn’t have to mean a life of silence. Instead, patients like 41-year-old Doug Reedy are finding options in technology, and hope at The Nebraska Medical Center. Rutar receives Chancellor’s Gold ‘U’ Award

Frank Rutar is not a traffic cop, although he is always on ‘patrol.’ Rutar’s expertise is dealing with radioactive materials that are used for research or medical treatment. As UNMC’s chemical and safety radiation specialist, his role is to help UNMC and its hospital partner, The Nebraska Medical Center, comply with the state’s radiation safety regulations, which fill a two-inch thick, yellow binder in Annex III.
