Advanced cancer, palliative care treatment guidelines released
In recognition of Cancer Awareness Month, the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) in collaboration with the American Cancer Society has released the Advanced Cancer and Palliative Care Treatment Guidelines for Patients, the latest in a groundbreaking series for individuals and their caregivers.
The Advanced Cancer and Palliative Care Treatment Guidelines help patients and physicians understand and respond to the range of medical, psychological, and social issues they may be facing.

2003 Databook on Nebraska Health now available
In 2003 the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services designated over 90 percent of Nebraska’s counties (88 of 93) as Mental Health Professional Shortage Areas (MHPSAs). Based on 2000 census data (Nebraska = 1,045,809), the population within these shortage areas exceeds 61 percent of the state’s total population. One facility, the Hastings Regional Center, has also been designated as an MHPSA.

Dr. Potter earns Outstanding Teaching Award
If not for a medical-school rotation in Geneva, Neb., Jane Potter, M.D., may never have become a national leader in geriatrics. The respected clinician and research is being honored for her efforts in education. This is the fourth in a series of articles featuring the recipients of this year’s Oustanding Teacher Awards. The awards will be presented at the Annual Faculty Meeting, which begins at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 20, in the Durham Research Center auditorium.

Caring attitude makes Dr. Lahue special
Bob Lahue, Ph.D., makes people feel comfortable. It starts with his name – he prefers Bob, not Robert – and extends to all he does as a cancer researcher and teacher of graduate students at UNMC’s Eppley Institute for Research in Cancer and Allied Diseases.
