Atrial fibrillation happens when the heart’s electrical system gets “short circuited,” reducing the expulsion of blood from a pocket in the heart called the left atrial appendage. Stagnant blood in the left atrial appendage can result in clots.

Marv Welstead, 98, has been a driving force in raising money in the Fremont area that will go toward Alzheimer's research at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Welstead's wife, Jean, died in 2009 after an eight-year battle with Alzheimer's.
