Student/Trainee Research

The Department of Internal Medicine has an active research program, with investigators involved in clinical, translational, and basic science research.

We define our research activities broadly because of the many needs of our patients and students, as well as our community. Our research includes quantitative and qualitative investigations of health and disease that address basic science mechanisms of disease; the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies; the assessment of outcomes of new and existing health practices including economic and human costs; as well as the assessment of educational strategies. Our research activities also provide training for students and house officers to better prepare them for the challenges and changes they will encounter in their careers.

Our research funding from external sources is approximately $25 million annually. Our activities are based at both UNMC and the Omaha VA.
