Darby Kurtz, assistant professor, archivist and public historian with the McGoogan Health Sciences Library and human of UNMC:

“I have always had a passion for history, but the thought of teaching in a classroom setting has always been a bit daunting for me. As a kid, I much preferred the idea of being an archeologist or a researcher, getting to explore and work with the artifacts on my own.

“I think my discovery and interest in special collections and museums happened at about the age of 12, when my mom took me and my sister to visit the Field Museum and the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. It was during that awe-inspiring trip that I realized that there were options to work in the field of history in spaces outside of the traditional academic venues.

“Getting to be one of those people behind the scenes, preserving the artifacts and helping put together exhibits, is really fun and enjoyable to me, and I am really lucky I get to do that here at UNMC.

“Plus, I really love organizing and creating lists, and it turns out that’s the main specialty of archivists and collections managers.”

We are fortunate to have Darby Kurtz as an archivist and public historian at UNMC in the McGoogan Health Sciences Library. No matter how many degrees we have, we must admit there is always more to learn. We must continue to learn. Winston Churchill said it well, “Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.”
