Free film screening on women and the opioid crisis
UNMC students and employees, Nebraska Medicine colleagues and community members are invited to attend a free film screening of “Attention Must Be Paid: Women Lost in the Opioid Crisis.”
The event will be held Monday, Oct. 23, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Dundee Theater, 4952 Dodge St. Secure free event tickets here.
This award-winning film explores the stories of women battling opioid use disorder and the neglect of women’s health care needs in the U.S. A panel discussion will follow the screening.
The film is produced, written and directed by Debra Gonsher Vinik, PhD, who has produced 21 documentaries, six of which won Emmy awards. Her newest film, “Attention Must Be Paid: Women Lost in the Opioid Crisis”, will be edited into a two-hour series airing on ABC-affiliated stations and an hour-long long version airing on PBS.
Following the screening, UNMC’s Alëna Balasanova, MD, associate professor of psychiatry, will moderate a panel discussion with: Dr. Gonsher Vinik, Marley Doyle, MD, associate professor of psychiatry and director of the Behavioral Health Education Center of Nebraska, Kristin Daniel, PharmD, Nebraska Medicine pharmacist program coordinator, and Patty Falcone, supervisor for health promotion for the Douglas County Health Department.

Mark your calendars as food vendors will be on the UNMC Omaha campus. Vendors will be located on both the east and west sides of campus, serving from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. daily.
The schedule is as follows:
East end of campus (Sorrell Center, Alumni Commons area unless specified otherwise below):

- Thursdays – Sgt. Peffers
- Fridays – Tastee Trailer (food trailer south of the Sorrell Center on Emile Street)
West end of campus (Durham Research Center towers)
- Mondays – Zemogs (food trailer located east of Durham Research Center)
- Tuesdays – Streetside (food truck east of Durham Research Center) (Oct. 17 start date)
- Wednesdays – Tastee Trailer (food trailer east of Durham Research Center)

The FREE film screening will be followed by a panel discussion featuring Dr Marley Doyle, director of BHECN, Kristin Daniel, PharmD opioid stewardship pharmacist, a representative from the Douglas County board of health, and the filmmaker herself. It will be a powerful and informative discussion about a population whose special treatment needs have largely been overlooked within the opioid crisis. I can’t wait!
