You are the recipient of the Excellence in Educational Service Award. Why is service to our learners important in health care education?

In the past, educators lectured without regard for the students’ learning styles or preferences. Today, we realize that standing in front of an auditorium full of note-takers is not the optimal way for them to learn. For this reason, we provide problem-based learning, hands-on learning, simulations and one-to-one interaction with educators. We serve the students rather than expecting them to conform to outmoded forms of teaching.

Describe your proudest moment as an educator.

Having educated multiple residents and students over my career, there are many individual moments when I have been immensely proud of the person I was instructing. In each of those moments, the learner was no longer reliant on my instruction to manage a complicated patient situation; the learner found their own way to resolve the issue safely and respectfully. I was no longer an educator, as I had become a colleague. The learner had earned my trust and confidence.

What advice would you give other faculty members who want to have an impact in education?

Be transparent. Ask for feedback so you can customize the teaching style to the unique needs of the student.

Do you have a favorite quote or philosophy on teaching?

Have a servant’s heart as you seek to meet the educational needs of the student.
