The School of Allied Health Professions will soon award post-baccalaureate certificates to graduates of six specialty programs in the division of radiation science technology education (RSTE).
The move was approved at a Jan. 25 meeting of the University of Nebraska Board of Regents. Under the new plan, graduates will be awarded a bachelor’s degree at the completion of the radiography program, and also will be awarded a post-baccalaureate certificate upon completion of a one-year specialty program.
The change was needed because the SAHP is unique nationally in its curricular design that allows students to pursue two areas of competency in the radiation sciences, radiography and an additional specialty. Currently however, UNMC students who complete the radiography program and choose to enroll in a specialty program receive only one academic credential, a bachelor’s degree, at the completion of both the radiography and specialty program.
The proposal will not increase student tuition or time to complete the programs. Pending approval by the Coordinating Commission for Postsecondary Education and the U.S. Department of Education, post-baccalaureate certificates could be awarded to graduates as early as spring 2014.
