Wellness Wednesday – Noontime walk to fitness

picture disc.Grab your walking shoes and join fellow UNMC Decathlon participants Thursday at noon.

Walk on the track around the perimeter of the Center for Healthy Living activity court – 12 laps equals one mile.

It’s Week 4 of the 10-week challenge, designed to increase activity among UNMC employees, and to show us activity options available on campus.

Participants can choose from easy, moderate and difficult activities, or develop their own.

Walking, like other exercise, can help you achieve a number of important health benefits. And, on campus, there are plenty of places to walk indoors. View an easy-to-read color-coded map.

Whether indoors or out, a brisk routine of walking can:

  • Lower low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (the “bad” cholesterol)
  • Raise high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (the “good” cholesterol)
  • Lower your blood pressure
  • Reduce your risk of or manage type 2 diabetes
  • Manage your weight
  • Improve your mood
