Cancer Center construction begins May 20

picture disc. The visible phase of the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center construction work will begin Monday, May 20.

The skywalk between Swanson Hall and the Durham Research Center will close, as will the Level One connection between Swanson Hall and The Durham Outpatient Center and the tunnel between Swanson Hall and the Munroe-Meyer Institute.

The Plaza sidewalk from the Durham Outpatient Center and the Durham Research Center will remain open as needed for staff and students.

There will be barricades installed that will identify the construction site and will affect both Dewey Avenue and 45th Street and will limit vehicle traffic to areas of single direction only with flagmen directing traffic during those times. Employees are encouraged to avoid travel on those streets as much as possible.

There will be future notices indicating construction work that will affect employee travel around the Cancer Center construction site. Employees are encouraged to heed all warning signs and to avoid construction equipment and workers.

During construction, will there still be access from the Durham Research Center to the sidewalk leading down the hill from the Munroe-Meyer Institute to Saddlecreek?

This is going to be a tricky pathway. There will be a tunnel from the Durham Research Center to the new Cancer Center Research Tower that will close one half of 45th Street at a time and will interrupt the sidewalk that leads to Saddle Creek Road. There will be alternate routes and employees should heed all signage during that construction. A sidewalk will close only if it appears to be a potential hazard for employees and public.
