SHARING the Green: Fun for a good cause

When next Monday rolls around, the results of the SHARING the Green golf tournament will be no secret within the halls of the College of Pharmacy.

“It will be well known around the College of Pharmacy who had the single best score,” said Courtney Fletcher, Pharm D., dean of the college, “as well as what team, and whether it’s a student team, and what class it is.”

The 2013 SHARING the Green Golf Tournament, sponsored by Metro Credit Union, will be held Friday at the Shoreline Golf Course in Carter Lake, Iowa.

“We expect our students to work hard, but there’s times to make sure they can have some fun, and this is a great opportunity for the students to go out and have some fun.”

There will be a 1 p.m. shotgun start for the event, which is the most important fundraiser for the SHARING Clinic, a group of student-run clinics that provide care to underserved people in Omaha and Lincoln.

In the four years that Dr. Fletcher has been promoting participation in the tournament within the College of Pharmacy, the number of golfers has more than doubled, with seven teams of pharmacy students and three teams of faculty and staff from the college set to hit the links this year.

“Competition sometimes is good, and – on occasion – the students really enjoy beating the faculty,” he said with a laugh.

The real motivation, Dr. Fletcher stressed, is to support the SHARING Clinic.

“It is an outstanding education environment for our students, and the patient care that is provided there to some of the underserved populations of Omaha is an important part of the mission of UNMC,” Dr. Fletcher said.

“But that we can have some fun supporting this effort, and get students and faculty together in a way that they don’t normally get together, that’s really an added benefit.”

The tournament provides a chance for faculty and students to interact outside the classroom setting, as well as allowing first-year students to get to know some of their instructors and classmates, Dr. Fletcher said.

“We expect our students to work hard, but there’s times to make sure they can have some fun, and this is a great opportunity for the students to go out and have some fun.”

SHARING the Green will accept reservations for foursomes and individuals until 5 p.m. Tuesday. The best ball tournament includes 18 holes with cart, range balls, lunch and a chance for prizes.

The cost is $100 for individual registration or $375 for a foursome. To make reservations, call Stephanie Krebs at 402-559-1063
