Craig W. Boyer

Each Thursday, we randomly feature a medical center employee. This week, we learn more about Craig Boyer from the School of Allied Health Professions.

  • Name: Craig Boyer
  • Hometown: Grew up on a farm between Liberty, Neb. (pop. 75), and Barneston, Neb. (pop. 115)
  • No. of years at UNMC: 12

Tell us a bit about what you do here at UNMC.
I work in the School of Allied Health Professions as administrative research coordinator. I am responsible for supporting pre- and post-award grant activity, serving as a liaison between SAHP and UNMC research support offices, and working with faculty to develop manuscripts for publication and coordinating/managing large research equipment in SAHP.

Leadership is one of UNMC’s brand values. Tell us of a time you witnessed an example of leadership at UNMC.
I’ve been surrounded by great leaders from the time I stepped on campus in 2001. After graduating from the Medical Technology program (now Clinical Laboratory Science) in the SAHP, I worked in Dr. Graham Sharp’s and Dr. Stephen Rennard’s labs. They both showed a clear vision with ambition to succeed on any of the projects we tackled. When I was in the department of surgery, Greg Prorok provided me with a clear direction and the value of effective communication. Now, as I have made a full circle around campus and back to SAHP, their leadership has shown me encouragement to perform to the optimum all the time and to drive for organizational success throughout the school and university system.

What is your favorite summer activity?
No particular order: CWS, coaching my daughter’s softball team, working outside, lighting fireworks, family vacations with my wife, Jamie, and kids Kennedy (7), Emerson (5) and Easton (2), and counting down the days till the first weekend of football. (Go Bears and Huskers!)

List three things people may not know about you.

  • I own and farm a piece of ground with my dad in southern Pawnee County. My dad, brother and I also own 50 head of sheep.
  • I’ve coached high school wrestling for eight years, currently at Papillion-La Vista. I also coached high school football for eight years at Papillion-La Vista South before stepping down last year.
  • We sell halves and quarters of beef to friends and neighbors from the cattle my dad raises. We also have lamb available. Let me know if you’re interested. Farm fresh!

I have worked with Craig for 12 years, attended his wedding, and (I like to think) helped mold him into the thoughtful, caring administrator that he is. If he had mentioned me as one of his mentors, I would have put in a plug for Boyer Beef and/or Bacon, which we have been purchasing for several years, but…que sera.

I met Craig at the UNMC Management Series and was pleased to discover his Liberty, NE connection. I have former family (ex-husband) from Liberty and I am always glad to find others who know where it is in our state!

Craig is a great asset to SAHP.
