UNMC will open the ice skating rink on Nov. 30, and the rink will stay open until Jan. 11, 2014.

The rink is located on the east side of 42nd Street, between the College of Nursing Building and the Sorrell Center. It features concessions, music and decorations.

This year, UNMC employees and their families can skate for free, as well as the employees and dependents of The Nebraska Medical Center, UNMC Physicians, Clarkson College and Ronald McDonald House employees and houseguests. Employees must be present and have valid ID card for dependents to skate. Skate rental is free as well.

For all others, the fee is $7, which includes skates.

Operating hours during the winter season will be:

  • 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Thursday.
  • 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday.
  • Noon to 10 p.m. Saturday.
  • Noon to 8 p.m. Sunday.

This year, the Ronald McDonald Benefit Skate, “Freezin’ for a Reason,” will take place Dec. 7, with the Skate-a-thon for Parkinson’s set for Jan. 10 and 11. (More details on these fundraising events are forthcoming).

After the Skate-a-thon for Parkinson’s, the rink will be closed for the year.

Huzzah to free skating, although I didn't mind the season pass. It was worth it. I am disappointed in the shorter season, though. It's the best/most fun exercise on campus and I've been waiting all summer!

I think you will get more participation (and the employees more exercise) with the free usage. Thank you for the change!
