Brain surgery the focus of next week’s Omaha Science Cafe

Michele Aizenberg, M.D., will discuss brain surgery at the next Omaha Science Cafe, at 7 p.m., Jan. 14 at the Slowdown, 729 N. 14th St.

Dr. Aizenberg is assistant professor of neurosurgery and oncology at UNMC and director of the Brain and Spine Cancer Center at The Nebraska Medical Center.

Dr. Aizenberg is board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery and has completed fellowship training in neurosurgical oncology at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. She has a special interest in primary and metastatic tumors of the brain and spine.

Utilizing special imaging and surgical techniques, Dr. Aizenberg is able to resect tumors in eloquent areas of the brain in ways to help prevent neurologic deficits. By individualized care, the best approach is determined for each patient so that they have maximal outcome. She works closely with radiation oncologists, neuro-oncologists, oncologists, neuroradiologists, neuropathologists, and neuropsychologists to provide the most comprehensive care for oncology patients.

With this multi-disciplinary approach, comprehensive neuro-oncology care can be provided for patients with central nervous system tumors. With this in mind, Dr. Aizenberg was instrumental in establishing the Brain and Spine Cancer Center at The Nebraska Medical Center.

Science Cafe is a free educational event sponsored by UNMC and other groups to increase the population’s science literacy. Hosted by UNMC and the Nebraska Coalition for Lifesaving Cures, Science Cafes are held the first Tuesday of each month in Omaha and one Thursday every other month in Lincoln. They are open to everyone 21 and older.

Free pizza, available for the first 50 people, will be provided by the Nebraska Coalition for Lifesaving Cures. For more information about Science Cafes, go here.
