Student spotlight – Meet Krupa Savalia

Krupa Savalia

Krupa Savalia

Education is one of the four pillars of UNMC’s mission and our students are the lifeblood of that aspect of campus life.

In UNMC Today’s Student Spotlight, we get to know some of these students, who will become tomorrow’s health care professionals.

Today we meet:

  • Name: Krupa Savalia
  • Hometown: West Orange, N.J.
  • Program/Year: M.D./Ph.D. Scholars Program / Year Five – doctoral candidate in cellular & integrative physiology

List three songs on your playlist.

My playlist is at the whim of Pandora! I love any genre of Latin music and can often be found listening to Johannes Linstead.

What sparked your interest in the M.D./Ph.D. program?

I wanted to enroll in a graduate program which would help me develop the unique skill set of bridging the gap between quality medical care to patients and innovative scientific exploration. The M.D./Ph.D. Scholars Program and department of cellular & integrative physiology at UNMC have encouraged this professional pursuit and I could not have found a better fit for myself.

Your favorite study snack is:

Coffee!

Your favorite app is:

Pinterest. I love the accessibility to free exchange of creativity!

Three things people may not know about you:

  • I’m a first generation American, raised by my parents who immigrated to the United States from India more than 30 years ago.
  • As a child, I was a competitive figure skater and woke up at 4:30 a.m. every morning to train at a rink that used to be the home of the New Jersey Devils hockey team.
  • My undergraduate degree is in biomedical engineering. After graduation, I decided to work in rehabilitation engineering and clinical research laboratories for three years before starting graduate school at UNMC.

It has been a pleasure working with you these past few years, you certainly do brighten up our lab when you walk in. The article must be a wee bit old because it doesn't mention that you have been elected President of the Student Senate and are a non-voting member of the University Board of Regents. Quite the feather in your cap.
