Outdoor event promotes fun, health

The College of Public Health’s first Field Day, Fun Day! — set for Thursday, May 1 — will not only be fun, it will advance the college’s mission to improve public health.

Analisa McMillan is co-chair of the college’s Wellness Council, which conceived and is sponsoring the event. The council is partnering with the Center for Healthy Living in conjunction with the Everybody, Everyday fitness initiative. The event is open to all UNMC faculty, staff and students

The event will also feature giveaways, including two box seats to the May 12 Omaha Storm Chasers game and two free month-long memberships to the Center for Healthy Living.

“The College of Public Health Wellness Council believes that we can best foster healthy populations and environments by providing opportunities for wellness education and activities,” she said. “This event is a perfect example of a fun and healthy opportunity that aligns with the college’s mission to create an environment to promote optimal health and well-being.”

Held on the Ruth and Bill Scott Student Plaza lawn (or the Center for Healthy Living’s gym in case of rain), Field Day, Fun Day! will feature a series of entertaining activities.

Physical activity is essential to the College of Public Health’s mission to promote optimal health and wellbeing, said Mary Morris, McMillan’s co-chair.

“The Field Day, Fun Day provides a fun opportunity to promote physical activity by participation in events like croquet, Frisbee toss, ladder ball, three-legged races and more. There’s sure to be an activity (or two!) of interest for participants at any level of fitness.”

Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams, and refreshments will be provided. Festivities will run 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. For information, email, call 9-5254 or stop by the Center for Healthy Living front desk.
