Sept. 9 Science Cafe to feature live scope of tenor’s vocal cords

Attendees of the next Omaha Science Café will get to see human vocal cords in action when Chris Bingcang, M.D., a University of Nebraska Medical Center otolaryngologist, scopes Opera Omaha chorus member and University of Nebraska at Omaha student Ryan Daly while he vocalizes.

The scoping will take place during the Sept. 9 Omaha Science Café, which begins at 7 p.m., at the Slowdown, 729 N. 14th St.

An expert in voice, airway and swallowing disorders, Dr. Bingcang received his medical degree from the University of Kentucky. His research interests include surgical simulation for resident education and outcomes of office-based laryngeal procedures.

Dr. Bingcang is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha and the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.

An undergraduate student at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Daly volunteered for the scoping that will reveal just how powerful the vocal cords are.

Also, as part of the event, soprano Shelby VanNordstrand, chair of the UNO Vocal Department, will perform two selections.

Science Cafés involve a face-to-face conversation with a scientist about current science topics. They are open to everyone (21 and older), and take place in casual settings like pubs and coffeehouses. Each meeting is organized around an interesting topic of conversation. A scientist gives a brief presentation followed by a question and answer period.

This café is being held in partnership with Opera Omaha and UNMC Physicians.

Pizza will be provided by The Nebraska Coalition for Lifesaving Cures for the first 50 people. For more information about Science Cafes, go to www.unmc.edu/sciencecafe. Podcasts of previous Science Cafes also are available on the website or available for download on iTunes here.

Through world-class research and patient care, UNMC generates breakthroughs that make life better for people throughout Nebraska and beyond. Its education programs train more health professionals than any other institution in the state. Learn more at unmc.edu and follow us on social media.
