Dr. Stuberg to assume statewide leadership role

Wayne Stuberg, Ph.D., associate director of the Munroe-Meyer Institute and director of MMI’s University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD), has been elected the chairman of Nebraska’s State Board of Health.

Dr. Stuberg, who has been on the Board of Health since 2010, will begin his one-year term on Jan. 1.

As chairman of the Board of Health, Dr. Stuberg will serve as an advisor to the chief medical officer of the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The board also oversees the regulation and licensure of health professionals throughout the state of Nebraska.

Dr. Stuberg said he was honored to represent UNMC on the state’s board.

“Nebraska is facing many critical health care concerns, including access to care in the areas of behavioral health and developmental disability,” Dr. Stuberg said. “I look forward to working with other members of the board and with HHS staff to identify our state’s health care concerns and move to improve them.”

“Dr. Stuberg is a talented administrator and a superb health care professional and educator,” said Mike Leibowitz, Ph.D., director of MMI. “We at the Munroe-Meyer Institute have benefited greatly from his leadership skills, and I’m sure he will use those skills to great effect in this important statewide leadership position.”

Dr. Stuberg has been with MMI since 1984. He is board certified in pediatrics by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties, a past president of the Nebraska Physical Therapy Association and past chair of the Board of Physical Therapy for the Department of Health and Human Services Division of Licensure and Credentialing.

He has served as a consultant for the state of Nebraska on the Governor’s Early Childhood Interagency Coordinating Council and also as a member of the Department of Education’s Special Education Advisory Council. He is a board member of the Commission for Motion Lab Accreditation, which accredits motion labs in the U.S. He has also served as the president of the UNMC Faculty Senate.
