The College of Medicine will be hosting a memorial tribute to John Gollan, M.D., Ph.D., former dean of the college, who died Jan. 6 at age 72 after battling Parkinson’s disease.

The memorial will be at 4:30 p.m. today in the Linder Reading Room.

Dr. Gollan was dean of the College of Medicine from 2003-2010. A native of Australia, Dr. Gollan was recognized internationally for his work in gastroenterology. Prior to coming to UNMC in 2001, he worked at some of the leading medical centers in the world, including Harvard Medical School, University of California, San Francisco, University of London, and University of Adelaide, South Australia.

He joined UNMC as chair of the department of internal medicine and two years later was elevated to dean of the College of Medicine. He stepped down as dean in 2010 and wound up his career as emeritus professor, internal medicine-gastroenterology.

Several campus leaders will share their memories of Dr. Gollan at the event. In addition, anyone in the audience who wishes to speak will be given the chance to take the microphone.

I decided to look up Dr Gollan as I was a patient of his 25 yrs ago and he was the kindest most knowledgeable Dr. He diognosed me with primary billiary scerhosis in 1990 at Brigham & women's hospital Boston Mass. I asked him how long could I live with this and he said how does 80 sound. At 55 I was happy. I will be 80 Nov 4 2016. I am so sad to hear he passed on. I have not met another Dr like him. I had wanted him to know I am almost there and still take the same drug actigall in generic and same dose. I lived in NH then and live in Florida now. My condolences to his family. Edith Pickance
