Lookin’ at U – Maggie Winnicki

Maggie Winnicki

Maggie Winnicki

Each Thursday, we randomly feature a medical center employee. This week, we learn about:

  • Name: Maggie Winnicki
  • Hometown: Bucklin, Kan.
  • No. of years at UNMC: 15

Tell us about what you do here at UNMC.

I work in the School of Allied Health Professions (soon to be College!) as part of an excellent team in academic and student affairs. I am called upon to bridge our student affairs to our academic affairs in the school, which means I work with policy compliance, academic data reporting, financial aid budgets, tuition and fees, and curriculum and grade coordination . . . to name a few. I also oversee our military programs and advise some of our online students. I have the privilege of working on behalf of students involved in 13 different health professions, and am excited to be part of the next phase for allied health as we become a college.

Commitment to excellence is one of UNMC’s brand values. Tell us of a time you witnessed a person or group act as a trusted resource at UNMC.

I was recently asked to be on the planning committee for an upcoming event here at UNMC — Health Professions Career Day. The purpose of the event is to expose underrepresented students early to the variety of health careers available to them, and provide stimulating, interactive sessions to engage them. The event is sponsored by the UNMC Center for Health Disparities, but representatives from all over campus and the Omaha community have come together to ensure this day is a success. It is important that we, as employees of UNMC, work with our local community to show them we are a trusted resource that they can depend on for compassionate care but also for cutting edge, nurturing education for their families. They are our next generation of health professionals, and I am so proud to be part of this project and many others that look to actively engage our youth.

What is your favorite summer activity?
Every summer my husband, children and I take a vacation with my family to my brother-in-law’s cabin. Dedicated time just to be with family — there’s nothing better!

List three things people may not know about you.

  • I spent much of my junior year of college studying at the University of Barcelona.
  • I’m a PK (preacher’s kid).
  • I am unashamedly a giant Harry Potter nerd. I have read the books more times than I can count and can often be found listening to the movie scores in my office.

Our Division of PA Education could not reach our successes with our distant learning and military programs without Maggie's expertise. So glad she's on our team.
For Maggie's benefit: "It is out choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities." – Albus Dumbledore.
