Lookin’ at U – Don Labrie

Don Labrie

Don Labrie

Each Thursday, we feature a medical center employee. This week, we learn about:

  • Name: Don Labrie
  • Hometown: Auburn, Maine
  • Number of years at UNMC: 15-plus years

Tell us a bit about what you do here at UNMC.
I work in the information technology area. I’m a workstation specialist, taking care of computing needs of the internal medicine and neurological departments. When I say “computing needs,” that includes computers, printers and mobile devices, including phones and tablets. It keeps me rather busy and current with the ever changing technologies. I enjoy the work!

Working together is one of UNMC’s brand values. Tell us of a time you witnessed a person or group work together at UNMC.
In September of last year, I witnessed the infectious diseases division of internal medicine do something on a global scale. The Biocontainment Unit that Phil Smith, M.D., created was activated to care for Rick Sacra, M.D., who had contracted Ebola in Africa. Watching Dr. Phil Smith, Marc Rupp, M.D., Angela Hewlett, M.D., Andre Kalil, M.D., and their tremendous staff deal with the pressures was intense. It seemed the entire enterprise held their collective breath during those tense days. The training and dedication of this wonderful team was rewarded with Dr. Sacra walking Ebola-free from our facility.

What is your favorite fall activity?
I love riding my Harley, and riding in the colors of fall is especially fun!

List three things people may not know about you.

  • I served 20-plus years in the United States Air Force. A majority of my career was as an electronic technician with the Post Attack Command and Control System supporting the Looking Glass aircraft.
  • I’m the director of the American Legion Riders, Millard Post 374. We are a group of service-related riders who love to ride motorcycles and raise money to support all veterans. We are always looking for new members. Contact me with questions!
  • The third is a secret that only my best friend of over 33 years (my wife) would know . . . and it’s going to stay that way! Sorry!!!
