UNMC faculty receive awards during annual Faculty Senate meeting

The University of Nebraska Medical Center presented awards to faculty members for meritorious teaching, service or mentoring during its annual meeting on April 20, at the Durham Research Center Auditorium on the Omaha campus. UNMC Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D., gave his annual address to the faculty followed by a reception.

Awardees are:

Ann Anderson Berry, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of pediatrics, College of Medicine and medical director of the Nebraska Medicine Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Newborn Nursery. Dr. Anderson Berry received the Spirit of Community Service Award – an award that recognizes continuing commitment to helping underserved or isolated communities by sharing expertise, resources, talent, and time without remuneration. A native of Casper, Wyo., Dr. Berry, who has worked at UNMC for more than 11 years, graduated earned her doctor of medicine degree from Creighton University in 1998.

Darwin Brown, assistant professor of physician assistant education, College of Allied Health Professions, and Ashish Sharma, M.D., associate professor, psychiatry, College of Medicine, of received the Outstanding Teacher Award. The award is given for excellence in teaching activities including providing an environment conducive to learning, developing rapport with students, promoting the importance of interpersonal relationships with patients and colleagues, and using continuous skill-building in instruction. Brown, an Omaha native, joined UNMC in 1986 and earned his master’s degree in public health from the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 2004. Dr. Sharman, of Ajmer, India, earned his doctor of medicine degree from Rabindranath Tagore Medical College in Udaipur, India and has served at UNMC since 2001.

Gloria Borgstahl, Ph.D., professor, Eppley Institute for Research in Cancer and Allied Diseases, and Joyce Solheim, Ph.D., professor, Eppley Institute, received the Outstanding Faculty Mentor of Graduate Students Award. The award recognizes faculty who exemplify excellence in the mentoring of graduate students. Dr. Borgstahl, who has served at UNMC since 2002, is a native of Dubuque, Iowa, and earned her Ph.D., at the University of Iowa in 1992. Dr. Solheim, a native of Gilman City, Mo., has served at UNMC since 1999 and earned her Ph.D. in 1992 from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Ill.

Carol Casey, Ph.D., professor, internal medicine, College of Medicine, and Lani Zimmerman, Ph.D., professor, College of Nursing Lincoln Division, received the Outstanding Faculty Mentor of Junior Faculty Award. The award recognizes faculty whose mentoring helped the mentee achieve rank advancement, research productiveness, clinical care accomplishments, and placements in publications, by providing assistance with grant proposals, teaching enhancements, and family/work-life balance. Dr. Casey, who’s been with UNMC since 1984, is a native of Mitchell, S.D., and earned her Ph.D. from Rice University in 1980. Dr. Zimmerman, a native of Poplar, Mont., earned her Ph.D., from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1983. She has served at UNMC since 1975.
