Betsy Becker, D.P.T., assistant professor in the division of physical therapy education in the College of Allied Health Professions is co-editor of a new book, “Integrating Physical Activity into Cancer Care: An Evidence-Based Approach.”

Dr. Becker also wrote four chapters in the book dealing with assessing motivation, readiness and physical considerations for physical activity, creating and evaluating physical activity programs, and resources and support groups for cancer survivors.

“Oncology health care professionals can use the book as a helpful guide when advising people with cancer about how physical activity can be incorporated into care,” Dr. Becker said. “Physical activity has many benefits, and integrating it safely into cancer care is essential.”

The book (available here) is a result of a cross-country collaboration of an interprofessional team of experts in physical activity for cancer survivors. This includes several UNMC faculty.

Ann Berger, Ph.D., professor and Dorothy Hodges Olson Endowed Chair in the UNMC College of Nursing, wrote a chapter.

Sara Bills, D.P.T., and Grace Johnson, D.P.T., in physical therapy education, offered contributions, as did the College of Pharmacy’s Susanne Liewer, Pharm.D.

UNMC alumnae Kelly McCormick, D.P.T., Olivia Huffman, D.P.T., and Kara Tischer, D.P.T., also helped work on the book while they were D.P.T. students.

The book features photographs by Fran Higgins, communications and media specialist in the CAHP.
