Pat Araujo

Each Thursday, we randomly feature a medical center employee.

This week, we learn more about

  • Name: Pat Araujo
  • Hometown: Lexington, Neb.
  • No. of years at UNMC: 45 (Oh my!) (Note: I will be retiring on April 3.)

Tell us about what you do here at UNMC.

I work in information security. But I am responsible for keeping track of all computer accounts, such as email, Blackboard, active directory, remote access, and various others systems for all UNMC faculty, staff and students. I do audits on these accounts to make sure a person should have an account, and I also close the accounts when a person leaves employment.

Innovation is one of UNMC’s brand values. Tell us of a time you witnessed a person or group demonstrating innovation at UNMC.

We are continually trying to automate and expedite account creation, so that individuals can be set up as quickly as possible. Recently, we did this for the visiting medical students who come to campus to do clinical rotations and are here for a short period of time. We want to make it easy for departments to get these students set up quickly.

What is your favorite spring activity?
I love baseball, so I’m anxiously waiting for the beginning of baseball season.

List three things people may not know about you.

Since I have been here so long, I don’t have many secrets.

  • During college, my geography club “hijacked” a plane to Cuba. Actually, we flew to Cuba, Kan. It was a small Cessna plane that our club used to take photographs of the topography of Nebraska for a project, and we took over the plane and told the pilot where we wanted to fly, instead of the scheduled destination. We landed in a plowed field and the whole town threw us a big party. It was a blast. It made the town newspaper!
  • I have a degree in secondary education but have never taught. I started working in IT here and never applied to teach.
  • My name is Paulette, and I don’t have a middle name.

Pat, you have been a great asset to UNMC for many years (45?!) and we will miss you, but I hope you enjoy your well deserved retirement years. By the way, I've been to Cuba, KS — very nice people there, so I'm not surprised that you received a warm welcome after your unorthodox landing. Now you will have time for a return trip! Congratulations and best wishes.
