LaKaija Johnson

Each Thursday, we randomly feature a medical center employee.

This week, we learn more about LaKaija Johnson, program manager for the Summer Health Professions Education Program.

  • Name: LaKaija Johnson
  • Hometown: Oceanside, Calif.
  • No. of years at UNMC: Three months

Tell us about what you do here at UNMC:
I have the best job in the world! I serve as the program manager for the Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) — previously known as the Summer Medical and Dental Education Program — a national program supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. This summer we will have 90 college freshmen and sophomores on campus who are interested in medicine, dentistry, nursing, public health and physician assistant studies. We will provide them with academic enrichment in the basic sciences and math, clinical experiences, career development activities, and learning and study skills seminars to increase their chances of acceptance into advanced degree programs.

Courage is one of UNMC’s brand values. Tell us of a time you witnessed a person or group at UNMC exhibit this value.
I have sincerely enjoyed learning more about the courageous life and legacy of Dr. Rubens Pamies, UNMC’s past vice chancellor for academic affairs and dean for graduate studies who died in 2011. His dedication to understanding and addressing health disparities has provided countless opportunities for underrepresented students to pursue careers in health professions through programs like the SHPEP. Dr. Pamies’ legacy is reflected in UNMC’s commitment to supporting programs that will directly enhance the diversity of our state and nation’s health care workforce.

What is your favorite winter activity?
Staying warm inside with a good book.

List three things people may not know about you.

  • I attended the first school in the nation to offer a Master of Public Service (MPS) degree, the University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service!
  • This is my first time living in a city that has a “real winter.”
  • I practice yoga, and I encourage everyone to give it a try. (Thank me later!)
