Omaha, Kearney to hold open houses for UNMC allied health careers

The University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Allied Health Professions will hold free “Backstage Pass” open house events in Omaha and Kearney for those interested in learning about careers in the allied health professions.

In Omaha, the event will be held on Saturday, April 1, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., and in Kearney, the event will be held April 22 from noon to 5 p.m.

The demand for allied health professionals is high as all fields face a staffing shortage. The event will enable prospective students to talk with current students, as well as faculty, and learn first-hand about allied health careers. Students will get to experience some of the new technology used in the classroom.

Allied health professionals — which include radiographers, medical laboratory scientists, physician assistants and sonographers — make up approximately 60 percent of the health care workforce.

Pre-registration is required for the free Backstage Pass events.

The Omaha event will be held in the Michael F. Sorrell Center for Health Science Education, northeast corner of 42nd and Emile streets. Free parking is available in Lot 36, located on 42nd and Leavenworth Streets, and Lot 25 south of  42nd & Leavenworth Sts.

The Kearney event will be held in the Health Science Education Complex at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, 2402 University Drive. Free parking is located near the complex.

Students will have the opportunity to hear about the college’s 11 professions and engage in interactive booths with activities that demonstrate what each profession is like. Admissions staff will be on hand to answer questions about applying to one of the college’s programs.

The 11 professions represented are:

  • Cardiovascular interventional technology;
  • Clinical perfusion education;
  • Cytotechnology;
  • Diagnostic medical sonography;
