Nebraska Science Festival highlights in Wayne, Columbus

The fifth annual Nebraska Science Festival – presented by the University of Nebraska Medical Center and scheduled for April 20-29 – is around the corner. And, with a multitude of science- and technology-related activities in communities across the state, it’s not too early to plan your SciFest schedule.

SciFest Social Media Scavenger Hunt – April 20-29

All ages are invited to participate in the statewide SciFest Social Media Scavenger Hunt. Simply take a picture of the item in the clue and post it to Facebook (comments section), Instagram or Twitter with the hashtag #nescifest. Each day, one winner will be chosen at random for a SciFest T-shirt. Winners will be contacted through direct messaging.

Columbus High School Open House – April 25 from 7 to 8 p.m.

Attend a brief behind-the-scenes, informative session on the development of the new Columbus High School, its STEM Academy and its integration of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Participants will hear from several Columbus High School instructors about current opportunities in integrating STEM for students. Participants will receive a behind-the-scenes tour and learn more about our STEM Academy – Skilled and Technical Sciences Program of Study and Pathway opportunities. Families are encouraged to bring students, especially those interested in STEM.

Fred G. Dale Planetarium in Wayne – April 28 and 29

Plan to attend any (or all) of the free, 45-minute shows that span the first life on Earth, the formation of stars, the great extinctions, the solar eclipse on Aug. 21 and a new era of lunar exploration to the moon. Visit the website for show descriptions and details.

  • April 28 – 7 p.m. – Back to the Moon for Good
  • April 28 – 8 p.m. – Origins of Life; Monsters of the Cosmos
  • April 29 – 2 p.m. – Eclipses and Phases of the Moon
