The fifth annual Nebraska Science Festival – presented by the University of Nebraska Medical Center and scheduled for April 20-29 – is around the corner. And, with a multitude of science- and technology-related activities in communities across the state, it’s not too early to plan your SciFest schedule.

SciFest Social Media Scavenger Hunt – April 20-29
All ages are invited to participate in the statewide SciFest Social Media Scavenger Hunt. Simply take a picture of the item in the clue and post it to Facebook (comments section), Instagram or Twitter with the hashtag #nescifest. Each day, one winner will be chosen at random for a SciFest T-shirt. Winners will be contacted through direct messaging.
Nebraska Engineering Senior Design Showcase – April 21 from 12:30 to 3:30 pm
Stop by the 2017 Senior Design Showcase — overlooking Nebraska's iconic football field in Memorial Stadium – and browse the new and innovative projects from graduating Nebraska engineering students, vote on your favorite project for the People’s Choice Award and tour the Nebraska Engineering complex, Nebraska Athletic Performance Lab and Memorial Stadium.
Star Party at Branched Oak Observatory – April 22 from 2 to 4 p.m. and April 29 from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m.
Branched Oak Observatory will open its gates to science and astronomy enthusiasts throughout the state. See celestial wonders like star clusters, galaxies, nebulae, and planets, through a variety of different sized telescopes.
Café Insecta – April 22 at 6 p.m.
Did you know, there are more than 1,900 edible insect species on Earth, and some two billion people eat a wide variety of insects regularly? Join Bugeater Foods at the Boiler Grand Hall in Lincoln, Neb., for a five-course bug sampler presented by Wei Jiang of the Nebraska Club. For $15, SciFest fans will get the chance to enjoy five samples. Kelly Sturek from Bugeater Foods will give a brief overview of each course and how bugs can be an essential part of a diet. RSVP as space is limited.
March for Science – Lincoln – April 22 at 3 p.m.
Join us in the March for Science – Lincoln, a satellite march to the March for Science taking place that day in Washington, D.C. The March for Science champions robustly funded and publicly communicated science as a pillar of human freedom and prosperity. Convene at 3 p.m. by the Nebraska Union (1400 R St.) and march through Centennial Mall to the Nebraska State Capitol (1445 K St.).
Words 4 Birds at Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center – April 23 from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Enjoy a day of words to celebrate nature and National Poetry Month. The day will start at 11 a.m. with two concurrent poetry writing workshops, one for adults and one for youth, led by several amazing local poets. After a 12:30 p.m. "bring-your-own" picnic lunch, you’ll finish with a 1 p.m. public reading of poems by both professional writers and workshop attendees…all with the beautiful prairie as a backdrop. Registration is required for the workshops.
Screening of Hidden Figures – April 27 at 7 p.m.
Families are encouraged to attend a free screening of the Academy Award nominated film, Hidden Figures, at Beatrice High School.
Telescopes and Prairie Skies Star Party – April 27 from 8 to 10 p.m.
In celebration of International Dark Sky Week, join the Wildlife Safari Park Education Department and Omaha Astronomical Society for telescope viewing, constellation education and gain a new appreciation of our nighttime environment. Regular admission.
SciPop Interactive at The Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum – April 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
We'll feature the science behind Harry Potter, Star Trek & comic book icons. Come in costume in support of your favorite character for a day of mystery and illusion! Brought to you by the Nebraska Local Section of the American Chemical Society and the University of Nebraska in conjunction with the Nebraska Science Festival.
