Dr. Nuss accepts joint UNMC College of Nursing post

Nebraska Medicine Chief Nursing Officer Sue Nuss, Ph.D., has accepted the invitation of the UNMC College of Nursing to serve as the College of Nursing associate dean for Nebraska Medicine Nursing.

In her new role, which began May 1, Dr. Nuss will be a member of the UNMC College of Nursing Executive Council and will work with the college to strengthen the academic-clinical partnership between Nebraska Medicine and the UNMC College of Nursing.

This type of collaborative relationship is part of a national movement spurred on by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing to strengthen academic-clinical partnerships to advance student education, promote nursing research, and engage faculty and staff in joint activities. Dr. Nuss already has a courtesy faculty appointment within the UNMC College of Nursing, and this appointment will further strengthen collaborative opportunities.

“In light of the ever changing world of health care and the nursing shortage, closer collaboration between the clinical and academic settings makes good sense,” Dr. Nuss said. “Building strong relationships with the college helps to develop a pipeline for nurses. My first affiliation with the UNMC College of Nursing was in 1980 when I was enrolled as an ADN student. For those who want to do the math, that means I am coming up on my 35th reunion. It is an honor to have been asked to serve in the role of associate dean for Nebraska Medicine Nursing. I look forward to working with Dr. Sebastian and the entire College of Nursing team.”

“We are delighted to collaborate with Dr. Nuss in this new way,” said Juliann Sebastian, Ph.D., dean and professor of the UNMC College of Nursing. “Her leadership and her dedication to making Nebraska Medicine the very best practice and work environment and to incorporating evidence into practice make strengthening our partnership such a fantastic opportunity. We already collaborate extensively with her and are excited about working ever more closely with our colleagues at Nebraska Medicine.
